Supporting a Major Student-Run Music Festival on Campus

Usage Scenario
A student-run production team at a world-renowned research university in Palo Alto, California, organizes and executes a day-long annual music festival celebrating student artists, musicians, and the campus creative community. This production team consists of 30 crew members, and for this project, they also brought in external event providers such as Verducci Event Productions, Overdrive Energy Solutions, and Sound on Stage to support the main stage.

The festival featured more than ten bands performing across two stages, along with food, drinks, and street vendors. It covered multiple blocks in an outdoor environment with around 2,000 attendees. The Solidcom H1 was used at the festival site, with fifteen crew members using it. The sound team cascaded their existing Clear-Com system with the H1 for stage coordination. The environment was open, with live music, dense radio traffic, and constant crowd noise.

Comfort was another key benefit for the team. With Bluetooth connectivity, crew members could pair personal earbuds such as AirPods instead of relying only on traditional comms headsets.


Reliable Range Across a Multi-Block Festival Site
They also commented on the Solidcom H1’s modern and intuitive design. In addition, it maintained communication over a range of up to 500 meters in real-world use, even when crew members moved away from the venue during breaks. A single Solidcom ANT01 unit can provide up to 500 meters (1640 ft) of range in open-field conditions. For larger-scale productions, the system can be expanded to support up to 80 beltpacks and 100 groups with the Geo Central Station, with coverage of over 4 million square meters through a roaming and cascading architecture.


System Integration and Crew Setup
The sound team integrated the Solidcom H1 directly into their existing Clear-Com setup, cascading both systems together for stage coordination. Beyond Clear-Com, the H1’s 2-wire interface also supports integration with other industry-standard wired intercom systems such as RTS, while its 4-wire interface extends compatibility for four-wire intercom setups.


Wrapping Up
Solidcom H1 helped crews stay connected across a large, noisy, multi-stage festival site. They appreciated the ability to handle multiple groups on a single beltpack. This reliable communication helped the student organizers execute an event of this scale and keep it running smoothly from start to finish.
