Hollyland’s Solidcom H1 intercom system delivered stable, full-coverage communication for a large-scale outdoor concert in Kuala Lumpur, enabling a 16-member follow spot team to coordinate lighting cues with precision across a packed national stadium.

“Good and stable signal. Clear audio. Long battery hour support.”

Meet Sam and the Follow Spot Team

Based in Malaysia, Sam leads a professional follow spot team specializing in large-scale live concerts and stage performances.
For the TWICE “THIS IS FOR” World Tour stop in Kuala Lumpur, the team was responsible for operating and controlling follow spot lighting on artists throughout the performance, ensuring accurate, consistent illumination during fast-moving stage sequences.

The full team consisted of 16 follow spot operators, supported by a follow spot leader, director, translator, and a technical support team from Hollyland, all working in tight coordination under live-show pressure.

The Project: TWICE “THIS IS FOR” World Tour – Kuala Lumpur

The project took place during the TWICE “THIS IS FOR” World Tour stop in Kuala Lumpur, hosted at National Hockey Stadium.
With nearly 8,000 audience members in attendance, the concert unfolded in a large outdoor stadium environment that posed clear communication challenges for the production team.

The stage was positioned at the center of the stadium, while the two follow spot teams were stationed on the North and West sides. Meanwhile, the FOH (Front of House) was set up on the South side, creating significant physical separation between lighting operators, team leaders, and show control. In this configuration, uninterrupted, real-time communication was essential to ensure follow spot movements stayed perfectly synchronized with the artists’ positions on stage.

In total, 20 people relied on the communication system throughout the show, including 16 follow spot operators, one follow spot leader, one director, one translator, and one Hollyland technical support team member. With multiple roles depending on fast, accurate cues, the reliability of the intercom system directly affected the execution of the live performance.

Why Solidcom H1

Before adopting Solidcom H1, the team had used a different intercom brand that frequently experienced signal dropouts during concerts. In large outdoor venues, these interruptions often led to delayed responses and missed lighting cues, increasing pressure on operators during live performances.

For this project, Solidcom H1 was selected specifically to address those issues. Its exceptional connection stability, seamless roaming capability across large venues, long battery life suitable for full concert schedules, and built-in calling function made it a practical solution for a complex, high-pressure environment.

As the team noted, compared to their previous setup, Solidcom H1 delivered a far more stable connection, reliably covering the entire stadium without the signal interruptions they had previously struggled with.

Solving Real Communication Challenges

Throughout the concert, Solidcom H1 maintained a stable and consistent signal across the entire National Hockey Stadium, allowing follow spot operators, team leaders, and FOH to remain connected despite long distances and the open-air setting.

Clear, intelligible audio proved especially important in the high-noise conditions typical of large-scale concerts. Even with crowd noise and stage sound, communication remained easy to follow, reducing the risk of misheard cues. Seamless roaming allowed operators to move within their assigned areas without worrying about reconnection, while the system’s 15-hour battery life comfortably supported rehearsals and the full live show without the need for battery swaps.

Team feedback during the project consistently highlighted the same points: clear audio, good and stable signal, and reliable battery performance. The built-in calling function further streamlined coordination by enabling quick, direct communication with specific roles, without interrupting the entire group channel.

Together, these advantages helped the follow spot team maintain focus on timing, accuracy, and performance quality, rather than troubleshooting communication issues during the show.

A More Confident Live Workflow

With Solidcom H1, the follow spot team experienced a noticeable improvement in operational confidence.
Stable communication reduced hesitation during cue execution, improved timing accuracy, and allowed the lighting team to focus entirely on performance quality rather than signal reliability.

Even under the pressure of a live international concert, the system supported smooth coordination between lighting positions and FOH, helping the team maintain professional standards throughout the show.

“Best giler the intercom.”

Takeaways

For Sam and his follow spot team, Solidcom H1 proved to be a dependable communication solution for large-scale outdoor concerts.
Its combination of wide signal coverage, long battery life, seamless roaming, and clear audio addressed the core challenges of stadium-based live performances.

By eliminating communication dropouts and reducing coordination friction, Solidcom H1 allowed the team to deliver precise, consistent follow spot lighting for TWICE, helping ensure a polished and professional concert experience for both performers and audiences alike.
